Chicagoland Soccer Top 25

By Patrick Z. McGavin

A weekend like the last one was certainly coming; we just didn't know when to expect it.

The fourth week of the regular season gave way to some of the most significant changes to the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25.

The team of the week is clearly Fremd, fresh off huge road wins last weekend: a 1-0 win Saturday over Naperville North depite missing two starters; and a 2-1 Friday night win that gave nationally ranked Marquette (Wis.) its first loss of the season.

As Chicagoland Soccer contributor Matt LeCren pointed out in his story of the Vikings win over Naperville North, Fremd played six opponents in a nine-day stretch and went 5-1-0 with their only blemish a 2-0 loss to Chaminade (Mo.) on Sept. 10 in Peoria. To add to their weekend feat, consider that the Vikings earned the wins in a span of approximately 21 hours, which includes the drives to Milwaukee and Naperville.

Until that stretch, Fremd was a bit of a mystery, only because they played far fewer games than most of their competition. Now we see what the Vikings are capable of.

The other big move in the top 10 followed Evanston’s 2-0 victory over rival New Trier, previously ranked no. 2.

Not coincidentally, Fremd and the Wildkits played the first game of the season in the MSL/CSL Challenge. The teams tied 2-2. Until they beat New Trier on Saturday, the Evanston had not played another ranked team. They deserve praise -- not only did they beat their rival, they became the first team this season to shut out the high-scoring Trevians.

Evanston likely would have jumped a few spots higher were it not for Glenbrook South holding them to a draw earlier in the week.

Games matter, results matter, but fundamentally, the competition is what finally separates and clarifies the rankings.

Out of the ranked teams, Rolling Meadows is the last team standing with a perfect record. The Mustangs play key Mid-Suburban League games against Barrington and Prospect this week. A big date against Fremd at Rolling Meadows on October 5 looms large.

Otherwise, the teams did not jump around significantly. It’s important to remember if a team drops, the reason might just be a team behind them had a more impressive week.

The volatility we saw at the top of the pool this week is hard to anticipate week to week. Fremd had a week to remember, and they deserve the special recognition that comes with it.
