Chicagoland Soccer Top 25

By Patrick Z. McGavin

Welcome to the penultimate edition of the regular-season Top 25 poll.

A season that began with promise and question marks is now reaching its zenith.

“The real season starts in two weeks,” Deerfield coach Rich Grady said after his no. 11 Warriors secured the top seed of the Class AA sectional at Wauconda.

Players and coaches spoke of the validation and excitement of receiving a high seed. The final regular-season poll next week will explore further the top seeds, and attempt to rank the top sectionals.

Class A tournament semifinals begin Tuesday with the top-seeds now entering the fray. Defending champion Althoff is the overwhelming favorite.

This is championship week throughout the land.

In the city, no. 20 Young looks to dethrone the seven-year reign of no. 21 Lane.

The Dolphins’ 2014 city title team is the last city program to win a Chicago Public League championship other than Lane. The game is Thursday night at Lane.

Be on the lookout for a detailed preview running on the eve of the game.

In the Central Suburban League championship, no. 5 Evanston plays at 11th-ranked  Deerfield.

The Mid-Suburban League Soccer Bowl features Prospect at no. 4 Barrington.

The DuPage Valley Conference, arguably the toughest in the state with three teams in the top six, does not have an end-of-the-season tournament.

Metea Valley’s stunning 3-1 victory over previously top-ranked Naperville North sets up a conference title showdown at no. 6 Naperville Central on Tuesday.

Metea Valley (4-0-0 in conference, 12 points) could secure the title with a tie. Naperville Central (3-0-1, 10 points) needs a victory.

What a magnificent way to end a fantastic regular-season.
