Chicagoland Soccer Top 25

By Patrick Z. McGavin

With a week into the books, a couple of things are already clear.

Certain conferences are already asserting their depth, individual star power and high quality.

The DuPage Valley looks like the best conference so far. It's led by top-four programs in Naperville Central and Naperville North.

Metea Valley made a big leap from last week’s First 50 poll, jumping 20 spots to land in the top 10.

The Mustangs were pegged as a team to watch with 10 returning starters from a program that lost five one-goal games to Naperville Central and Naperville North last year. They

They arguably made the biggest statement with a victory over Benet.

The North Suburban has a sizable drop off after its top three teams. But that trio is something to behold, led by top-ranked Libertyville, no. 7 Warren and no. 15 Stevenson.

The other conference that must be accounted for is the Central Suburban League South Divison. It's top programs all strutted their stuff the first week: no. 5 New Trier; no. 10 Evanston; no. 12 Glenbrook North; and no. 18 Glenbrook South.

The other significant first week story is the influx of club talent as players from programs such as Eclipse, who made their college choices, have decided to play high school ball.

Players like Daphne Murray of Young, Lida Dodge of New Trier and Sarah McCracken of Naperville Central help make up an exciting wave of gifted and skilled players who deepen the talent pool significantly this year.

McCracken might be the fastest soccer player in Illinois. She ran on the Redhawks’ 400-meter relay and 800-meter relay teams that were among the best in Class 3A last year.

Her speed is next level.

New talent means even greater excitement. Since the best players tend to populate the rosters at the top programs, it makes the bests teams even more top-heavy and loaded.

“All of my good friends are on the team, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to close out my career,” Daphne Murray said after scoring a goal in her first game with the Dolphins, a mesmerizing free kick from 37-yards against Lyons.

There has never been a greater time to be a girls soccer fan in these parts.

The previous ranking refers to the team’s First 50 ranking among Chicago-area schools. Thirteen programs from outside the area were included in the our preseason poll last week.
