Spartans post 9-0 Central Suburban South win

DEERFIELD -- Glenbrook South keeps a’ rolling along. The Titans made it 13-straight wins to start the season with a 9-0 victory over host Deerfield in a Central Suburban League South Division contest Tuesday night.

The win raised the second-ranked Titans league mark to 3-0-0. Deerfield, the smallest school in the league, fell to 3-6-2, 0-3-0.

Glenbrook South tallied three times in the first half.

"I did like in the first half that our off-the-ball movement and creativity was on display," Glenbrook South coach Reggie Lara said. "I wish we would've finished more of those chances. Our play did drop off a little bit, since we started to play a little more direct toward the end of that first half."

In the second half, Glenbrook South fine-tuned its attack and demonstrated its full power.

"We were capable to find the feet especially for our forwards," Lara said. "We were able to play combinations off of it.

“The forwards were checking through and created opportunities that way. The quality of play really didn't drop once we put in our subs, or second-string players that haven't played much throughout our season. They really displayed high-quality soccer.

"Every single game is an opportunity to improve and try to get better at at least one thing."

The Titans' Jacob Ciszyk led the offense with a pair of goals.

"They were fast quick goals, and I didn't have to think too much," said Ciszyk who has now five on the season. "All I had to do was to touch and take the quick shot. It's something that I've been working on more.

“Our offense is very diverse. We like to possess the ball and win the game that way. We might not score as many goals, but it's just kind of the way we play."

Junior midfielder/forward Matheas Carvalho earned the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the Match honor for a three-assist night and work ethic that stood out.

"My goal here was to be unselfish," said Carvalho, who now has seven goals and six assists. "As a striker, you feel like you're the one to score the goals. If you look at the scoreboard, you will think that our striker would be scoring the goals.

“It's kind of my play style to drop in and distribute the ball. I play off the ball, and it's amazing. I'm just happy to help the team."

Glenbrook South’s team aspect continues to stand out. The group’s unity is a major reason for its impressive success.

"I don't think individual goals or assists are important," Carvalho said. "As long as you win the game, that's what matters here with the team.

“Some games come to you -- the quality goals and quality assists. We do have such a good group. Everyone here is just like brothers; we've been playing so long together. We're out there dancing and having fun. We're all happy and no one is getting mad at each other. Everyone has a way of working together."

Ronan Kessler started the Titans' scoring in the fifth minute of play with a flick kick that went over Deerfield keeper Liam Connolly after an assist from Carvalho.

Ciszyk scored his first in the 16th minute after another Carvalho assist.

The lead increased to the 3-0 halftime edge after Catesby Conant found the back of the net off an assist from Brayden Gould.

Glenbrook South upped its output in the second half. Ciszyk completed his brace thanks to a Yianni Biscotakis helper in the 45th minute.

Just two minutes later, Emil Cerimovic scored unassisted to make it 5-0.

Dennis Allickolli (Carvalho), Daniel Joseph (unassisted), Victor Jodlowski (Gould) and Joseph (unassisted) completed the run of goals.

"Every single game is an opportunity to improve and try to get better at at least one thing," Lara said.

Deerfield entered the match in a tough spot with nos. 1 and 2 keepers, senior captain Xander Yang and sophomore Nolan Zinman, out with injuries.

Third-string goalkeeper Connelly battled gamely in the match. Adding insult to injury, the Warriors lost two more defenders against Glenbrook South.

"I do want to give a ton of credit to Glenbrook South, and coach Lara is a great coach," Deerfield coach Ryan Crane said. "But more importantly, he's a great person.

“It seems weird to say that in a game that we lost 9-0, but he understands the game; and he understands situations that schools are going through. We need more of that in the coaching world.”

The tough transition for Deerfield continues after being moved from the league’s North Division to the South. Every school is larger than them, several significantly so, and the group has been called the best conference grouping in the state.

"I really hope the Central Suburban League is enjoying what's happening to athletes at Deerfield," Crane said. "Not just in soccer, but across the board. …

“We have a winning record against Class AA schools; we're a AA school.

“For our school to be put in the position that we have has been incredibly frustrating and disheartening. Even though that we did some good things (in this game), when you're playing a team that's one of the best in the state, it makes it very difficult to take any positives out of it like that."

Deerfield hosts Ridgewood Friday (Sept. 27) at 4:45 p.m. as part of the school’s Homecoming festivities.

On Thursday night, host Glenbrook South continued its unbeaten run but saw its win streak end in a 1-1 draw against third-ranked Evanston (12-0-1, 3-0-1).

Evanston got past no. 15 Glenbrook North 2-1 on Tuesday night (Sept. 24).

The Titans (13-0-1, 3-0-1) conclude their conference run against Glenbrook North at home on Oct. 1 after playing this weekend in the Soccer Village bracket of the Great River Classic on Saturday in Bettendorf, Ia.

Glenbrook South opens the tournament against Verona (Wis.) at 6:45 p.m. Friday.
