The record book for girls soccer features many firsts by New Trier and two more have just been added as the program prepares its initial state appearance since 2019 when it competes in this weekend's IHSA Class 3A Finals at 7:30 p.m. at North Central College in Naperville.
The Trevians (23-2-4) meet Edwardsville (17-3-1) in Friday's second Class 3A semifinals match. Fremd (16-4-4) faces St. Charles North (17-2-5) in the other semifinal at 6 p.m. The with the winners advancing to Saturday's 6:30 championship and the losers competing in the third-place match earlier that day at 11:45 a.m.
Jim Burnside moved past Mark Longo, of Notre Dame (Quincy), to become the state's all-time winningest coach and the Trevians broke their own record from 2004 for most consecutive shutouts when they recorded their 17th straight in their 1-0 victory over Lyons in Tuesday's Dominican University Supersectional in River Forest.
Burnside, who is 609-93-51 in 27 seasons as the Trevians' head coach, already owned records for the most state trophies won in the sport with 12 and his six state championships ties him with Longo for first place in that category.
New Trier, which qualified for the state finals for a record 17th time, also has captured the most sectional championships with 23.
The Trevians have won eight matches in a row and are 15-0-2 in their last 17 starts, which all were shutouts. That record-breaking streak began on April 16 with a 0-0 draw against Glenbrook North and there was another scoreless draw on May 2, that time against Glenbrook South.
Beside the win over Lyons, only one other team has been within a goal of New Trier during the record shutout streak, and that was Benet in the Naperville Invitational championship match April 29. In its five postseason victories, the Trevians have outscored their opponents by a 21-0 margin.
Only two teams defeated New Trier, Class A Columbia 1-0 on March 29 and Naperville North 2-1 on April 11. The Trevians also settled for a pair of early draws against Deerfield and Stevenson.
New Trier defeated Senn 9-0 and their host 6-0 in the Niles North Regional and then captured a 2-0 victory over Loyola in its own sectional semifinals. Another 2-0 victory, this time over Lane, secured the 22nd sectional championship, which is one more than Notre Dame (Peoria), a Class AA state finals qualifier.
There was a great deal of drama in the team's supersectional victory. Freshman goalkeeper Annie Fowler had to make several key saves against the Lions. Senior forward Charlotte Dellin, who has scored six goals in the last four matches, connected on a free kick in the 57th minute to account for the game-winner.
Senior midfielder Josie Noble leads the Trevians in both goals with 15 and assists with 10. Dellin has scored 14 goals and assisted on five others while freshman forward Addy Randall has nine goals and eight assists. Senior forward Jaime Elias has eight goals and eight assists, and sophomore forward Quinn Brahm also has collected eight goals.
Senior midfielder Sybil Evans has seven goals, sophomore midfielder Maeve Driscoll has five goals and four assists, senior midfielder Annie Paden has nine assists, freshman defender Claire Gallagher has five assists and senior defender Basie Shannon has scored four goals.
Fowler has played in 20 matches and has an 0.20 GAA. Junior Caroline Hague has appeared in 10 matches and hasn't allowed a goal. The Trevians have relied on seniors Clara Deliduka and Shannon and juniors Kennedy Colegrove and Honor Dold to help them establish their new single-season IHSA record for consecutive shutouts.
Team captains for the Trevians, who were ranked third in the final Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, are Deliduka, Dellin, Evans, Noble and Paden.
If they can keep the impressive streak going over the weekend, they would finish with 28 shutouts, which would tie the state record set by the Trevians championship team in 2004.
New Trier last won a state championship in 2016 when it capped a run of three-straight titles. It won its first championship in 2003, repeated in 2004 and won again in 2006 after placing second in 2005. The Trevians also took second in 2017 and 2018 and were third in their last appearance in 2019. Burnside's first two teams, in 1997 and 1998, also claimed third place.
The Trevians fell just short of a state trip a year ago when they lost to Libertyville 1-0 in the supersectional.
The state's new all-time winningest coach is assisted by Daniel Rogan, Molly Lombardi, Jeff Cobb, Jamie Atwell and Bridget Burnetti.
Edwardsville is making its first state appearance since 2004 and its second in program history. The Tigers lost in the quarterfinals 20 years ago, so this year's team is the school’s first state trophy winner.
Coach Abby Federmann's Tigers have won their last nine matches and have only lost to one school from Illinois this season, 2023 champion O'Fallon, with 1-0 defeats on March 21 and April 15.
They have outscored their opponents 18-2 in the playoffs, beating O'Fallon 1-0 in their sectional semifinals in Collinsville and winning 5-0 over Minooka in the sectional final in Pekin. The team assured the school's first trophy in the sport with a 4-1 win over Andrew in the Bloomington Supersectional.
Top scorers for Edwardsville include junior forward Ellie Neath (16 goals, 13 assists), senior midfielder Kylie Peel (12 goals), sophomore forward Maggie Young (eight goals) and junior forward Kate Jose (six goals).
Sophomore goalkeeper Genny Burroughs has made 76 saves in 21 matches for a team that has recorded 12 shutouts and allowed just 11 goals this season.
