Titans' produce 2-0 victory, Wildcats regain spark after break

GLENVIEW -- Playing your best soccer at the end of the regular-season is what every manager wants from their team.

Libertyville (11-4-1), ranked 12th in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, and no. 16 Glenbrook South (12-2-6) have happy coaches.

The two sides got together Thursday for a final tilt. The host Titans shutout visiting Libertyville 2-0.

Both teams have a shot at meeting for a third time this season in the state playoffs in the Hersey Sectional semifinals. Glenbrook South has a 2-0-0 advantage over Libertyville this season after winning the first meeting this season 1-0 in a Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Classic consolation pool match April 13 at New Trier.

"We've been on a non-losing streak, ties and stuff like that," Glenbrook South coach Cassidy Price said of her team’s 10-1-6 record since March 19. "I think it was important for us to go into the playoffs on a positive note and put in goals nice and early.

“It set our tone of playing our brand of soccer, and it’s exciting. Libertyville was a good strong team and a good opponent to have. Just happy with the outcome. At the end of the day, we got the shutout and our keepers made some great saves."

Glenbrook South jumped out on the right foot by scoring both of its goals in the first half.

The Titans broke through almost immediately off a corner kick. Katie Condon scored off a touch from teammate Adyson Clemen that was started off the leg of UIC-recruit Olivia Olmert in the third minute.

"We have different set plays for corners," Ollmert said. "Whatever set play we're doing, I know where to put the ball. I practice a lot on my own. I have pretty good accuracy that I know where I want the ball to go.

“You just don't get that opportunity to score a goal sometimes during games. Once you get it, it's very important to take that opportunity, to put something away. At the beginning of the game, I was able to set that one up."

The other Titans' goal occurred in the 20th minute. It sprung from a Division I connection. Fairfield-bound Lindsey Ciss took a free kick near midfield. Denver signee Megan Murray got on the end of it and put her shot into the back of the net.

"I just try to follow the ball in the air and try to get there before everybody else," Murray said. “She always is on target with her kicks."

All season long, the Titans have split time between its two senior keepers -- Lyndsey Mack and Yale recruit Mikayla Morse. The pair has combined for nine previous clean-sheets this season. They both earned another against Libertyville.

However, Mack earned the Chicagoland Soccer MVP of the Match honor with five outstanding saves in the second half that included several point-blank stops that and kept Libertyville off the board.

"It definitely, doesn't bother me (sharing time). We push each other so much," Mack said. "I have so much trust in her. When she's in, I know she's got us. And I know she feels the same way. Usually, we just switch off. At the end of the day, which ever half we're picked to play we just go there to do a job.”

Mack confidence is buoyed with the help she receives, especially against quality teams like the Wildcats.

"I just trust my defense and all my players," Mack said. "(Libertyville) kicked us out of playoffs last year. I knew that we had to take it to them, and we did. It was a team effort that keeps us going.”

The visitors found their footing in the second half.

Junior Lily Frantz was part of the offensive uprising.

"I had the run though, but I couldn't get the shot I wanted, and it went right to the goalkeeper," Frantz said. "It was definitely a frustrating moment. We did get a lot of moment with our forwards, and it started working in the second half. In the first half it was definitely lacking."

Libertyville swept through the North Suburban Conference without surrendering a goal.

"We had a great conference run, and this was a game that will prepare us for going into the playoffs,” Frantz said. "I think we're ready, just this one was a little bit of a rough one."

The Wildcats will try to find the reason for their first half power outage.

"We just picked up our energy," Libertyville coach Daniel DePaz said. "The first half we sat back a little bit. Not sure why? First half just sat back too far. Second half, we picked up the energy and started to move forward.

“If you pick up the energy, you're going to have the ball more. When we have the ball more, we will play our game and have chances. It's simple to step forward and pick up the energy level a little bit. We also picked up our defense a bit too, (Glenbrook South) didn't have many chances.

"There's a few things that we can work on from this game," DePaz said. "We know that we can't go into the playoffs playing part of the game. We have to play a whole 80 minutes. That's the biggest focus for us. We know what we're capable of and how to play. Right now, we have to take things one game at a time."

Libertyville opens regional play next Tuesday as the number four-seed and will take on 14th-seeded Prospect with a potential meeting against regional host and no. 5-seed Stevenson in the final.

Top-seeded Glenbrook South will meet play-in winner and 17th-seeded Hoffman Estates in a Schaumburg Regional semifinal Wednesday.
