Class 3A sectional semifinals

At Evanston

(9) Leyden 1, (7) Notre Dame 0
Notre Dame started out on its front foot, but its pressure was unable to break through. Leyden settled in to shift the momentum in their favor for the better part of the first half.  Oliver Salgado, Jesus Ramos, Ryvin DelPilar and Diego Esquivel all had quality chances shut down by the Don's backline and goalkeeper.  Despite a Notre Dame flurry in the last part of the half, the game went into the break scoreless. The opening of the second half belonged to Leyden. Within the opening minute, Salgado sent a cross in front of the goalmouth that was just out of the reach of Ramos.  Minutes later, Ariel Diaz sent in a corner that was initially cleared by the Dons, but went right to the Eagles Rafa Nozka. He quickly sent a cross to the far post that found a wide-open Brandon Delgado who brought the ball down and rifled a shot just inside the far post for a 1-0 lead with 35 minutes left to play. The Eagles created several other good chances, but the Notre Dame keeper was up to each task. Notre Dame's Max Stalenczyk tried to find the equalizer with a ripper from 35 yards, but Eagles keeper Daniel Llanos leaped and stretched to parry the ball away from the upper-left corner and around the goal. Leyden's back four of David Tracewicz, Yadier De La Cruz, Fabian Rodriguez and Duvan Trujillo then shut down every attack until the final whistle blew. Leyden (18-4-1), the West Suburban Conference Gold Division champion, advances to meet second-seeded New Trier (19-1-2) for the title at 6 p.m. Friday. Notre Dame, the East Suburban Catholic Conference champion, finished its season at 15-4-2.
