Class 3A state tournament
regional championships

At Hinsdale Central

(4) Hinsdale Central 3, (6) Mt. Carmel 1
The host Red Devils overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to win the 14th regional in the program's 51-year history. Luca Davies, Abdullai Ardit and Robbie Rocque scored for Hinsdale Central (13-5-3). Austin Ward, Bayls Zamalaitis and Martin Montoya created the assists. "Credit to (Mt. Carmel), they came out with intensity and work rate," said Hinsdale Central coach Mike Wiggins. "That resulted in them getting on the end of a ball that gave them the lead in the first half. At halftime we felt like we were getting plenty of chances, and that it was just a matter of time if we could just stay with it. We made a couple of slight adjustments defensively, nothing too drastic, but enough to firm things up on our end. Proud of our guys in how we responded in the second half. Luca did what we knew he could do, as he has all season, and got us back in it with such a big goal. His 26th goal only extends his single-season record. What's amazing is less about the number of goals, but the significance of so many of them. Ardit got the game winner, and what a goal he had. Robbie finished it off at the end. ... Martin Contreras was the difference in the first half in goal; he made several massive saves to keep us in it. Proud of the boys. I wish every youth player who grows up playing this great game, could experience what our fans at this great school created tonight in an amazing comeback. There was really good soccer played this evening from very talented players on both sides all over the field." The Red Devils advance to the Proviso East Sectional semifinals to meet top-seeded Morton at 4 p.m. October 25.

At Leyden

(9) Leyden 3, (4) Niles North 1
The Eagles (17-4-1) won their first regional championship since 2018 with a come-from-behind win. The visiting Vikings (21-3-0), who are ranked fifth in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, started fast out of the gate when Quinn Graham took a pass on the counterattack and dribbled 60 yards and beat two Leyden defenders. He then calmly slotted home a beautifully placed left-footed shot just inside the far post for a 1-0 lead. Sixth-ranked Leyden responded with great opportunities in the last 25 minutes of the first half, but was denied by the Niles North keeper, who was up to every challenge thrown his way. About 13 minutes into the second half, Leyden's Brandon Delgado beat his defender on the right side and sent in a cross that Jesus Ramos redirected into the back of the net to tie the game at 1. A minute later, Fabian Rodriguez sent in a 60-yard free kick for the game-winner. Niles North dialed up the energy and intensity for the final 25 minutes creating some dangerous chances, but Leyden keeper Daniel Llanos stood tall with several great saves. With a few minutes left in the game, Leyden's Alexis Santos gathered a cleared ball and sprung Oliver Salgado on a counterattack breakaway that the IHSSCA All-Stater finished to seal the game. Leyden will try to extend its unbeaten streak to 13 matches in an Evanston Sectional semifinal. The Eagles will meet the Notre Dame Regional winner at 4 p.m. October 24.

At Reavis

(3) Young 3, (5) Reavis 0
The visiting and 20th-ranked Dolphins (15-6-3) put their mark on the game after 1 minute, 30 seconds on a nice combination. Aidan Leatourneau took a pass from Cole Hockman down the sideline. After he beat his man, he found Szymon Szkodon for a one-touch finish. Cole Hockman headed in an Adrian Cogolludo corner at the back post for insurance. Later, after a Sam Henle corner was cleared, Garent Petrulis lifted the ball back into the box. John Stanton beat his mark and headed the ball home to end the scoring. Keeper Dylan Zadeh made some monster saves to hold the shutout. Young advances to the Proviso East Sectional, where it will meet the Lyons Regional winner at 6 p.m. Oct. 25. Reavis, the co-champion of the South Suburban Conference Red Division, finished its season at 14-4-5.

At Streamwood

(2) Streamwood 6, (7) Grant 0
On a night where many matches featured plenty of drama, the no. 19 Sabres dismissed the trend with four first half goals. Jairo Sanchez assisted A.J. Sabanovic and Merced Availa on the opening goals. Luis Vega assisted the third and recorded the final two tallies in the second half. Andy Benitez and Jose Pena also put their name in the goal column. Josue Lopez and Ricardo Aguilar guided the second half assists. Issac Morales made one save for the clean-sheet. Streamwood (15-4-4) advances to the Round Lake Sectional, where it will meet the Harlem Regional winner at 6:30 October 24.

At Warren

(2) Palatine 2, (7) Warren 1 (2 OT)
David Kozaev's goal in the 95th minute gave fourth-ranked Palatine the win. The Pirates (19-0-3) advance to the Fremd Sectional to face the Stevenson Regional winner at 7 p.m. Oct. 24. Warren's Christian Albarran gave the host Blue Devils the lead in the 10th-minute after a Mikey Yang assist. Palatine evened the match in the 42nd minute. Warren keeper Ethan Cole made six saves for the Blue Devils, who concluded the campaign 12-10-2. "What a season," said coach Jason Ahonen. "These boys never gave up. They worked until the final whistle in everything they did all year long. Could not be more proud of the effort, their attitudem and their teamwork was impressive. What a wonderful group of young men."
