Class 3A state tournament regional semifinals

At Hinsdale Central

(4) Hinsdale Central 8, (13) Hubbard 0
Senior forward Robbie Rocque scored a hat-trick to open the game and finished with four goals and an assist. Luca Davies also had a big night with a hat-trick and assist. Na'il Hanif scored the final goal of the match. Ardit Abdullai dished out two assists, and Enzo Cinque and Balys Zamalaitis produced one apiece. Hinsdale South improved to 12-5-3 with the win. "We talked about the importance of defending, of being disciplined and about not creating fouls in our pre-game meeting," said coach Mike Wiggins. "As a result, we did not receive any unnecessary cards. I thought we did really well getting back, and our individual defending was much better tonight. We wanted to get after them offensively in an effort to take the pressure off of our backline, and we accomplished that too. It was a good result all around." Davies continued his meteoric climb in the school records books. The all-stater's triple gave him 25 goals for the season, which topped the previous mark from former Red Devil all-stater Jack Smithson (24 goals in 2003). Davies also moved into second on the career goals list, passing the 43 tallies of Daniel Grasso (2000-2002). The senior is also tied for third for the most points in a campaign with Brian Collins (2006) at 53. He is placed third on the all-time points list with 96.

At Stevenson

(11) Buffalo Grove 4, (6) Mundelein 0
Buffalo Grove stunned Mundelein with two early first half goals, then added another two more after the break to claim a well-deserved 4-0 upset victory. The Bison, which dropped a 2-1 contest Oct. 12 to Palatine in the 48th-annual Mid-Suburban League Soccer Cup, will meet the third-seeded host Patriots at 11 a.m. Saturday in the regional final. Buffalo Grove senior Deny Grabchuk got the Bison (9-10-1) off to the perfect start with his opener just inside one minute. Then teammate Abdul Abdurakhmon hit a 30-yard bomb to double the advantage over Mundelein (10-9-4). "Dennis (Likhovid) gave me a great ball, and I was able to give us an early goal, which is so important in the playoffs," said Grabchuk, who struck again in the 46th minute when he took advantage of some confusion deep in the Mustangs end. The closer came from Likhovid, the Mid-Suburban League East Division Player of the Year, who notched his 17th of the season 60 seconds later. "We were all disappointed with our loss to Palatine in a game that we felt we could have won," said Abdurakhmon. "So we came into this game with a lot of confidence. Because of the way we played against Palatine, we felt we could win tonight if we played just as well."

At Streamwood

(2) Steamwood 3, (15) Hononegah 1 (2 OT)
The Sabres (14-3-3), who are ranked 19th in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, had to work harder than expected after a scoreless halftime and a second half that ended 1-1. A.J. Sabanovic gave the hosts the lead in the first OT and delivered the insurance goal assist to Luis Vega in the second extra period. Jairo Sanchez assisted the game-winner. Max Galvan scored the Sabres' opener unassisted.

At Warren

(7) Warren 1, (10) Zion-Benton 0
The Blue Devils (12-9-2) prevailed thanks to a 58th-minute Mikey Yang goal assisted by Angel Benitez. Ethan Cole made six saves for the clean-sheet. "Very happy for the boys and very proud of their overall effort today," said coach Jason Ahonen. "We lost to them just two weeks ago, and I was very pleased to see how the boys bounced back and worked together. We were able to find a way to win tonight. Hats off to the Zion-Benton goalkeeper Brandon Gonzalez, who stood on his head and kept them in it. I gotta give a tip of the cap to my own goalkeeper, Ethan Cole, who came up huge in the shutout. He made one save on a bicycle kick from an attacking Zee-Bees player and pushed it just wide to keep the game in our favor. Couldn’t be more happy for Ethan. Our backline played tremendous tonight, led by Angel Benitez, Gunnar Zajac and Abraham Casterjon. Chris Crowson and Diego Torres were all over the field and Michael Yang, once again, used his speed and found the back of the net."
