Preview story: Evanston must deal with Deerfield to repeat as CSL champs

The Central Suburban League championship match is a rematch.

Deerfield was the leader of the North Division at 4-0-1. Evanston went unbeaten in a South Division run that included a 3-0 victory over rival New Trier.

There will be plenty of motivation in the ranked rumble between 2022 state finalists.

Deerfield (12-4-1), ranked 25th in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, will look to avenge its 3-1 loss in the Central Suburban League finale last season. The Warriors went on to finish third in Class AA.

No. 8 Evanston will additionally celebrate Senior Night against Deerfield. The Wildkits brought home Class 3A fourth place hardware last June.

"It's always fun to play in a championship game,” Evanston coach Stacy Salgado said. "… This game happens fall on our Senior Night and our last home regular-season match, which makes it more special."

Both clubs have adapted to motion on their rosters this season.

Deerfield enters the match off a 2-0 cross-over loss to no. 18 Glenbrook North. The Warriors carry a 5-3-1 mark against the big-school division this year.

"Last year's team was more balanced in scoring and more explosive," coach Rich Grady said. "This year we had a lot more close games to deal with, so the team has developed a lot of mental toughness." 

Evanston (16-2-1) has won eight of its last nine matches.

"A lot of new players are getting big minutes for our squad," Salgado said. "Last season, we were incredibly junior-senior heavy. Our current veteran players have certainly stepped up and gotten our group to buy in to our competitive culture."

Evanston's leaders this season include Adriana Merriam, Shayna daSilva, Lily Shure, Sydney Ross, Anna Bergmann and returning Chicagoland Soccer All-Staters Ariel Kite (GK) and Jocelyn Leigh

The Deerfield offense is paced by Marissa Siciliano, Jessie Fisher, Maddie Stevens, Bella Krummenacher, Simon Kriz and 2022 All-Stater Emily Fox.
