BARRINGTON -- Piper Lucier and Sarah Sarnowski each netted twice as Barrington thumped visiting Saint Viator 5-0 in the teams’ Naperville Invitational opener Thursday night at Barrington Community Stadium.

The Fillies (9-0-1) took a significant step toward the quarterfinals with the emphatic victory, but it took the reigning MSL champions a while before they could put one past the stubborn Lions (5-5-0).

Junior Maddie Ziebarth opened the scoring when she headed in from in-close in the 20th minute. Lucier followed with her first of the night when she sliced through Saint Viator to meet up with a rebound off the bar from the foot of Kaitlin Taylor.

The Fillies made it 3-0 just after the half hour when Sarnowski finished in clinical style in the 33rd minute.

Lucier converted a spot-kick four minutes before intermission. Soon after Mother Nature conjured up a nasty storm that chased the clubs indoors to wait out a near 45-minute delay.

Once back at it, the Fillies dominated play right up to when Sarnowski earned her double in the 58th minute. She benefitted from some terrific work by teammate Meredith McGreevy.

"We're getting better each time out. (Our) movement, passing, and communication is improving with each training session and game," said the senior defender McGreevy. “But, we all know there's still plenty of work ahead of us.

"Roos (VanRoekel) has been a great addition to our backline, and both of us have come to trust the other as center backs. On the outside, Ellie (Sanchez) is just an amazing player, and Annie Tarpey has done a great job filling in at the other outside spot for Jazzy Fertig, who is out with an ACL."

All three of Barrington’s keepers, Megan Holland, Avery Trapp and Abby Raynor,  shared in the Fillies seventh clean-sheet of the season.

The Fillies, who are ranked second in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, will host Downers Grove South in the final game of group play at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Saint Viator finishes its first week of tournament play vs. Downers Grove South at 5 p.m. Friday (April 21) at Barrington.
