Red Devils remain undefeated in 6 matches with 2-1 win

WHEATON -– Until early in the second half, the Hinsdale Central/Wheaton Warrenville South nonconference match featured very little action Saturday afternoon.

The two teams were stuck in a feeling-out process, battling each other in the middle of the field. The lack of action in the first 40 minutes – 2 total shots on goal – led to a scoreless half.

But then the fun began, first with impromptu exhibitions during the 10-15-minute halftime break and then in the final 40 minutes of play on the pitch.

After three-consecutive miserable Saturdays which led to cancellations and rescheduled games due to the mixture of rain, cold, snow and bad field conditions, the teams welcomed a large crowd.

The halftime break was full of action and energy: a group of students and adults played wiffle ball in the far southern corner of the stadium; three young boys delighted in taking over the 50-yard line area, dancing, tackling each other and smiling; a few people decided to bust out a pair of lacrosse sticks; several young kids amused themselves by peppering shots in  shootout style at the net.

The warm and sunny day – the first one this spring – even led to a Golden Retriever frolicking around the field without a leash.

Eventually, the halftime fun gave way to soccer and a a more spirited and action-filled second half. Ultimately, for the visiting Red Devils, the day proved most satisfying.

Julia Marinaccio and Avery Edgewater each made opportunistic plays in the box to score second half goals to power the Red Devils to an impressive 2-1 win over the Tigers.

“Against a team like this, which is well-organized and has an awesome program with a great coach and an awesome field, you are not going to find many mistakes in the game, just the way he organizes his team,” Hinsdale Central coach Tony Madonia said of Wheaton Warrenville South and its coach Guy Callipari. “Taking advantage is part of the game, even if they are few and far between."

Hinsdale Central (4-0-2), an honorable mention team in the Chicagoland Soccer Top 25, built off its solid 4-0 win over Wheaton Academy on Thursday to remain undefeated heading into Tuesday’s West Suburban Conference Silver Division opener against Oak Park and River Forest at Dickinson Field in Hinsdale.

“It’s great to be going into Tuesday undefeated,” Madonia said, bellowing out a big laugh while smiling. “There’s still a lot left, though. We’ve got four games next week, so it was nice to get more players and faces out there today. I’m very proud of how they were so disciplined and defended.

“We had to make some adjustments. I liked how they sorted it out among themselves, which makes me proud.”

Wheaton Warrenville South (2-2-1) scored its lone goal on a penalty kick from Brooke Ittersagen with 12:41 remaining in the game. The sophomore defender calmly took her time, slapping in a shot in the right corner to slice the deficit to 2-1.

“I was pretty confident, because we talked about it during the pregame. I was ready,” Ittersagen said of her first goal of the season. “The goalie was kind of standing to the right side of the goal, so I just put it in the back of the net. It felt good to score, even though we didn’t get the outcome we wanted.

“I felt toward the end of the second half we really upped our game and tried to get some shots. We showed some heart out there. I think we can improve and do some big things. We have a lot of returning players.”

The Tigers failed to get a shot on goal the rest of the game. Ashlyn Adams’ attempt trickled just outside the box with just over two minutes left.

Wheaton Warrenville South's Callipari credited Hinsdale Central “for being opportunistic” in the game.

“We talked about the difference between reacting and anticipating, and they anticipated on both of their opportunities,” he said. “Good teams make the best out of it.

“We did not anticipate several situations on the final third for us offensively. If we had, we might have been in a better position to capitalize and maybe won the game.

“It was a good game. Every quality team is going to be difficult. Our schedule keeps us honest but also allows us to grow. Playing seasoned teams will help us down the road. Brooke did a nice job on her 1-v-1 situation.”

Wheaton Warrenville South senior defender Ella McClatchy said the backline was physical and matched Hinsdale Central’s intensity.

“Hinsdale Central is a great team and very physical and has some awesome players,” she said. “I think what we can learn from this game is just organizational stuff and talking through each third of the field. We need more connection there.

“We have to work on building out, not forcing things. We were definitely hesitant in the first half but came out stronger after talking about some stuff at halftime. We definitely saw some improvement in the second half.”

Wheaton Warrenville South senior midfielder Kate Gronlund said the one-goal defeat was disappointing, especially due to the lack of scoring chances. Hinsdale Central freshman goalie Katherine Skinner, who took a hard hit when she was sandwiched between two players in the 53rd minute, finished with six saves.

“It’s early in the season, so it’s always a learning experience but we came out with a lot of heart and played hard,” Gronlund said. “It’s always positive when you are at least creating chances, and hopefully they will come in the next one.”

Hinsdale Central exited Wheaton with a quality road win. Both of the Red Devils goals were aided by being in the right place at the right time.

Marinaccio a junior, scored the first goal when Wheaton Warrenville South goalie Marilyn Dixon came out a few steps from the line, then got in a group of people and attempted a two-handed, punch-out save. The ball scooted off her hands, right to Marinaccio, who slotted the ball right into the net for a 1-0 lead 14-plus minutes into the second half.

“Once someone takes a shot, we try to be there to follow it,” Marinaccio said of her first goal of the season. “I ended up being there to follow it and hit it into the back of the net. It was a collective effort. I haven’t scored a goal in four months, and this was my first-ever goal in high school.”

On the second goal, Edgewater, a sophomore, seized an opening to extend the lead to 2-0 with 14:48 left in the game. Teammate Peyton Rohn slammed a shot that Dixon saved near the far post. However, she couldn’t wrap up the bouncing ball, and Edgewater smacked it in from five yards.

“Me and Peyton play club together, so I feel we have really good chemistry,” Edgewater said. “She always can find me making the runs. She had a really great ball that I was able to get on to. It was unlucky that the goalie dropped it.

“We played really well in the first half just connecting passes, so it was good to finally get goals in the second half.”

Hinsdale Central senior defender Ava Elliott said beating the highly ranked Tigers was a nice way to end the week. The Red Devils have allowed just one goal in their last three games, including a scoreless draw against then no. 13 Oswego East on April 1.

“We’re all really really happy,” Elliott said. “They had just beaten Oswego East, which is a really good team. We were ready for this game, because we knew it was going to be a tough team.

"It feels good to beat them, especially on their field. The winning streak feels really good. We’re all beat up a bit, so winning proves a lot for our team.”
