McGavin's weekly poll
moves to Chicagoland Soccer

For the last five years Patrick Z. McGavin has compiled a girls soccer poll for the Chicago Sun-Times readers.

Starting this week, the veteran sportswriter's Top 20 will appear exclusively in Chicagoland Soccer.

Recently, McGavin's soccer workload at the paper has been cut back. This allowed Chicagoland Soccer to add the popular feature.

McGavin started as the soccer beat writer for the Sun-Times in the fall of 2011. He has provided the girls and boys sides with game stories, polls, features, previews and all-area teams. His poll will encompass all teams in Chicago and the suburbs.

"Rankings are a very lively and I think useful editorial part of the process in covering soccer," McGavin said. "Obviously, they're highly subjective and people can sometimes take exception to them.

"I see the poll as a way to extend the conversation. I'm thrilled at the opportunity to continue these rankings, to re-ignite, if you will, the debate, and add  color and flavor to the already distinguished and wide-ranging coverage at Chicagoland Soccer."

McGavin's ranking formula considers a team's body of work, goal differential, strength of schedule and head-to-head performances among other factors.

"This is a great addition to Chicagoland Soccer," said publisher Dave Surico. "Polls add a little extra excitement to any sporting community, and I'm excited that we can present it to our member schools and the high school soccer community at-large."
