Goalkeeper Rose an
instant classic at Plainfield South
Saves preserve tie against West Aurora

By Patrick Z. McGavin

PLAINFIELD — What's in a name, indeed. For Plainfield South, Shakespeare's famous query has the right answer: "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Quintin Rose is a sophomore keeper whose name is gaining prominence and attention. Playing his first year in high school, the Cougars' athletic, standout keeper makes a deep and cutting impression with his speed, agility and quickness.

The word is spreading.

"A lot of our opponents don't know his name, because he's new but once they play against him, they know how good he is," Plainfield South coach David Brown said.

West Aurora is the latest to discover first-hand.

Rose made several high-level stops that nullified the Blackhawks' strong second half play as the Cougars played West Aurora to a 1-1 draw in a late season nonconference prelude to the beginning of state tournament play here Saturday afternoon.

Rose earned the Chicagoland Soccer Man of the match honors for his accolades. He registered nine saves. "He's been solid for us since day one," Brown said. "He played club last year, and we knew he was going to be our keeper since day one."

The game appeared to be a shootout of sorts after the teams both scored in the opening movements before the game settled into a more tactical exercise in trying to force a crucial mistake from the other side.

Brown played a slightly different lineup in acknowledgement of the team's Senior Day. "We got some of the older guys a chance to run around," he said. "Not all of them start, and it was good to give them that opportunity.

"We pushed numbers in the final five [minutes]  to try and get one there at the end, and we were a little disappointed we couldn't. Until the very end our kids were fighting, talking and communicating. West Aurora is always going to bring a good team over here, and my kids were surprised when they found out what their record is."

Playing with the wind in the second half, West Aurora (3-7-10) enjoyed far superior possession time and generated far more opportunities. Rose and some quirky bounces made for some high-incident play without actual closure.

The narrative is a familiar one for the Blackhawks. The game proved a microcosm. Unfortunately for the Blackhawks it was the wrong kind. "It's what our season has been," West Aurora coach Joe Sustersic said.

"We have 10 ties in 20 games. That gives you an idea of how close our games have been. We've played 20 games this year and every one has been either a tie, a one-goal loss or a one-goal win."

Blackhawk forward Jose Munoz scored his team-best fourth goal of the year in the fifth minute off a beautiful through-ball from Ruben Moran. "We did pretty well with our movement, and we had some good touches in that first half," Munoz said. "They had a good pass toward me in the front, and Ruben played me a good ball."

The lead did not last very long.

Cougars' midfielder Dominick Christiansen, a crafty and slippery player, got free in the 11th minute for the equalizer. If anything, the Cougars rued their inability to do more in the first half when they had the advantage of the wind.

"I think the wind played a factor with all of the long shots," Plainfield South midfielder Rocky Del Real said. "In the second half we did a better job of passing the ball, because we had to play against the wind. We did well to get into the attack and get our set pieces in.

"We're just not getting on the end and finishing as well as we could, or otherwise, this game might have been different if we did."

Still the game reflected the continued growth and promise of the Cougars' season. Plainfield South (8-6-3) is undefeated in its last six games (4-0-2). Midfielder Rey Uriostegui proved especially dangerous in space, using his speed off of counters to create some high pressure against the Blackhawks.

His forays proved some promising possibilities in the second half, forcing Blackhawks' keeper Robert Marquez to make two excellent saves of his own. Marquez made a superb kick save on one ball and then smothered another ball inside the six-yard line to preserve the 1-1 score.

Plainfield South saw reason for hope and a lament for the missed opportunities. Del Real agonizingly saw his ball before an open net on a rebound sail high and go over the crossbar. "Overall we did a pretty good job [offensively], but we have to do a better job finishing, like the one I missed."

Both teams experienced the same jolting deflating. Munoz also missed on open net and Blackhawk midfielder Juan Pablo Ruiz had a sharp liner hit off the near post in the second half. "On my shot that was a little quick," Munoz said. "I could have had that."

The story was Rose. His dramatic leap allowed him to punch another Munoz shot over the bar. He also made two other diving stops. "I thought overall our defense did a much better job in the second half to clear out a lot of balls they were playing in," Rose said. "I think had we played like this in the first half, when we had the wind, we probably would have scored more goals."

Most of all, Rose evinced the excitement of living in the thrill of the moment. "I really like playing high school," he said. "I wasn't sure if I'd enjoy it, but I have"

On this day he was the difference.
