Sloan goal gets Deerfield by Waukegan
Warriors advance to quarterfinals of Glenbrook Cup

By Rusty Silber

NORTHBROOK -- Whether it's playing in the back or contributing to the attack, Annie Sloan has helped lead the way for Deerfield this season.

Sloan started the game on the backline Friday night, but her biggest impact was going forward late in the first half. She scored the only goal of the game to give the Warriors a more-difficult-than-expected 1-0 win over Waukegan in the opening round game of the Glenbrook Cup at Techny Fields in Northbrook.

For her efforts, Sloan Chicagoland Soccer MVP of the Match honors.

"Last year, I started at forward," Sloan said. "Then we needed a right back, and they put me in there. I've really been in the right back spot ever since. This year, I know I can play a defensive position, but I can also play a forward spot. I have the ability to adapt to my position to help my team."

Sloan was a big help creating and making things happen in the final third of the field after she was moved up top by coach Rich Grady. She scored the game-winner in the 33rd minute off an assist from Julia Harlan.

"I really never thought I would score," said Sloan after her first goal of the season. "We did a good job getting the ball out wide. The cross came in, I had a bad touch at first, and I was able to settle it. I just played it to the far post in the corner, right where it needed to be."

Her abilities have her wondering which is the better place on the field for her to help the Warriors. Is it on defense or attacking as a forward?

"I do like my defense and to be back there," Sloan said. "But it's fun to be up top. Defensively, there's four senior backs that have played together since third grade. We do have a lot of communication, shifting and knowing how to cover for each other along with our keeper Sari Eisen. She's supportive and knows how to communicate with us for what we need to do."

The other seniors included Shae Feldman, who is out with an injury. In the back Friday were lassmates Gabby Lazar and Jesse Halloway, and junior Sophie Gray.

Deerfield (12-3-0) eked the decisive goal past a stingy Waukegan defense, but it wasn't one of the the Warriors' better games. Especially, for a team that was given a number one seed for the Class 2A Grayslake North Sectional in the upcoming IHSA state tournament.

"I'm not thrilled with our performance and some of the issues we've had throughout the season," coach Grady said. "We can't have that many chances and not finish. We have to do more with our finishing. We need to do the right things. We keep telling them it will bite us in the butt in a close game, if we don't put away chances.

"So we moved the ball and did a lot of things well, but we need to put that possession edge into a scoreboard edge."

Fatigue may also have been a factor.

"We did have a game (Thursday against Maine East, a 7-0 Central Suburban League North Division win)," Grady said.

The Warriors had a number of issues with their forwards trying to get high quality shots on goal. A number of them missed the goal or put shots right at Waukegan keeper Kimberly Luna (8 saves).

"I really don't know what was going on with us," said forward Erin Rosenzweig. "We couldn't get it together connecting like (Waukegan) was able to. I really thought we were a stronger team then they were. But you win some and you lose some. We did win it, but it really didn't look like we won it.

"I really don't know what was wrong with us. Maybe, we had it in our heads that this was going to be an easy game for us."

Warriors' midfielder/forward Margot Sylvan had a scoring opportunity that went by the far post in the 42nd minute. After her shot she collided with Luna and needed to be helped off the field. She returned about 10 minutes later.

Waukegan (2-11-2) played one of its best games of the season. The Bulldogs looked more aggressive and gave the Warriors a hard-fought match.

"From the start, I feel our team held our own against Deerfield," Waukegan coach Rachel Brennan said. "Going into the game, I knew the ranking that Deerfield had and the results they've had this season.

"I'm proud of my girls to stay strong against Deerfield. who definitely has had a good season. We strived to keep our shape on the field and connect passes on the field. We were able to play defensively against them. I thought we connected as a team and wanted to get the win."

Deerfield advanced to the quarterfinals. The Warriors will play Crystal Lake Central (6-4-2) Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The Tigers were a 5-1 winner over Reagan (Wis.) on Friday. als and the finals Saturday afternoon.
